Is splenda dangerous? – Your Vancouver Personal Trainer Nutritionist tip of the week.  A new study recently published in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health has the chairman of Citizens for health in the U.S. up in arms over a recent study and the FDA’s failure to revoke its approval of the artificial sweetener sucralose, marketed under the name “Splenda”.

Splenda’s slogan is “Splenda tastes like sugar, because it’s made from sugar”. The company faced scrutiny for this slogan, as the product is actually mainly chemically derived. Sucralose is a high-potency sweetener, combined with maltodextrin and glucose (that’s the sugar part) as fillers to make Splenda. Splenda is approved for use in Canada and the U.S. and was originally thought to have no real side effects in the body, as the majority of it is not metabolized or absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. This is the premise of most sweeteners.

Well, if you’re taking Splenda to lose weight, this most recent evidence suggests it may be working against you. Secondly, good gut bacteria (microflora) carry out a number of important roles, including fighting off bad bacteria and producing vitamins, and maintaining normal immune system function. A reduction in these helpful microbes may have an affect on medical conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, cardiovascular disease, obesity and cancer.

  1. Don’t use Splenda at all!

    I like to say sucralose, not Splenda, because that is what Splenda is. And it is in a lot of stuff Sadly, the package doesn’t have to say Splenda, or diet, to have sucralose in it. You have to read labels. So, you might still be using it and don’t even know it!

    A lot of people, including myself, have gotten/are getting sick from it.

    Sucralose is poison. It ruined five years of my life. I had a laundry list of medical problems while taking it. I went to several doctors. I had a dozen different tests. I was told that I had a number of different problems. I was on different medication for many years.

    The slogan, “Made from sugar…” is very misleading. Splenda might be made from sugar, but it is far from sugar. The resulting chemical is a class of chemicals called organochloride. Organochlorides are typically poisonous.

    carbon monoxide – made from oxygen so its like a breath of fresh air.

    You are right, sucralose is popping up in many food items in its own, and that is something that people should be aware of. People often get mixed up between “sucrose” (sugar) and “sucralose” on a label.

    The reason I chose “Splenda” to focus on is because it’s popping up everywhere, and is commonly seen as the safer and more accepted alternative to aspartame. The marketing gurus at Splenda are working overtime to make their product come across as natural and safe, but science says otherwise.
