Training For Fitness – Your Primary Concerns

Primary Components of Fitness

See full size imageWhen we say “fitness” we generally refer to the physical sense, meaning the capacity of our bodies to do physical work. Our level of “fitness” is divided into four primary components:

Cardiovascular Capacity – Also referred to as our “aerobic capacity”. Our cardio capacity is the ability of our respiratory system to take in oxygen and deliver it to the cells via our circulatory system where it is used at the cellular level to create energy.

Muscular Capacity – Derived of three components in its own – endurance (repeated muscle contractions over a long period of time), strength (maximum amount of force a muscle can exert), and power (explosive strength)

Flexibility – The range of motion (ROM) a joint is capable of performing.

Body Composition – The proportion of fat free mass to fat mass in the body.

Consider your ability in these areas to be your foundation of physical fitness. Being the four primary components, its best to ensure that you develop these areas first and foremost before moving on to the secondary components of fitness (ex. Agility) to be covered next.
