Secondary Components of Fitness

See full size imageFitness comes in all different shapes, sizes, abilities, and elements. Certain athletes are developed in some elements of movement better than other athletes. A power lifter, for example, will be able to lift a considerable amount of weight more than a tri-athlete will, but will not nearly be able to run, swim, or bike the same distance. This brings us to the secondary components of fitness, known as performance based fitness, and they include the following: 

Balance – the ability to hold a position in a stationary or dynamic situation 

Coordination – the ability to use different body parts in a smooth and fluid motion. 

Agility – the ability to change direction quickly. 

Reaction – the time required to respond to a stimulus. 

Speed – the ability to complete the range of motion over as less time as possible. 

Power – the product of strength and speed. 

Mental Capability – the ability to concentrate and focus on the exercises at hand and the effects they have on your body during your workout. 

These are all very beneficial and must not be ignored. When arranged in a workout program effectively they can mimic the real movements we due in every day life or specific sports. Once a strong foundation is developed in the primary components, one can progress to secondary components and fine tune the workout program.
