Overtraining is a physical, behavioral and emotional condition that occurs when the volume and intensity of an individual’s exercise exceeds their recovery capacity. They cease making progress, and can even begin to lose strength and fitness. Overtraining is a common problem in weight training, but it can also be experienced by runners and other athletes.

A common misatake among many. According to some “experts” overtraining is a mistake amongst all. Others will tell you its merely imposible to overtrain. Clearly the line sits somewhere between the two extremities, and as with every matter concerning the human body, crossing that line is different for every individual. Here are some indicators:

Energy Levels- One of the most common and embraced benefits of working out is increased energy! Sure, maybe not RIGHT after your workout are you gonna feel at your greatest, but during your regular moments throughout the day you should feel more “alive”! When you wake up in the morning, arrive at work, cook dinner…these are some of the moments during which you may, or should, be feeling like you have an extra hop in your step. Be careful, though, not to mistake low energy levels as a result of overtraining when in actual fact you could be just plain ol’ lazy! As you advance in your fitness, you will discover your body and be able to distinguish between the two.

Strength Gains- Pretty simple…. If you’re training for strength, you ought to be getting stronger. If you’re not getting stronger, there’s something you’re not doing right. Overtraining could be that “something”. Ensure your muscles have enough recovery time both inside and outside of the gym.

Bodyweight- You can look at this from two angles. If you’re training to build mass, and….you’re not building mass!, you could be overtraining. Take your time using progressive overload, but don’t OVERload. You’ll tire your muscles out to fast, and they’ll need much more time to recover and progress. If you’re training to lose weight, and….you’re not losing weight!, you could be overtraining. Again, take your time. You’re body needs to be tricked into losing weight. You’re body tends to “fight” whatever change you’re trying to give it. If you train to hard, or diet to hard, you’re body will say “f@ck off!” and try to hold on to whatever it is you’re trying to deprive it from.

Speak to your personal trainer to find out if you’re on the right track to your fitness goals, and look for the proper signals that indicate you are training at optimum intensities.

We’ve all heard this before, “80% of any fitness goal is eating right”. But, is this really true? To answer this question one must consider the level of fitness they stand in, their fitness goals, and their current eating habits. Take, for example somebody who is obese with poor eating habits and little exercise experience. Considering they’ve never known a thing about proper nutrition, then yes, 80% of their fitness goal will very well be eating right. On the other hand, for a professional athlete who’s body is already conditioned and who’s eating habits are well, 80% of their fitness goal will be performance related. Proper nutrition comes naturally to them, and their eating habits are well established already. What is most important for individuals like this are their training methods. Are they training at the intensities they need? Are they pushing their bodies to new limits? Are they getting proper rest periods? The lean muscle mass these individuals already have in their bodies work to burn calories and fat even when at rest also. No matter what your fitness level though, proper nutrition is always key. It should never be treated less than equally as important as your training because they work hand in hand. Without the right nutrition you can not train properly. Poor diet in a workout routine can drastically affect your energy levels, leave you dizzy, or diminish your gains. Don’t spin your tires out by putting all the empty calories back into your body that you just worked off during that intense workout. Make sure you’re eating at least an hour before your workout so that your stomach has enough time to digest the food and so that you have that energy available.

Welcome to 2010! Its a new year ladies and gentlemen!

Welcome to 2010! Its a new year ladies and gentlemen! Many of you have reassessed your fitness goals and fine tuned your workout programs to accommodate the positive physical and mental changes you wish to see in the great year ahead. Its time to get busy! Right!?!? Its time to get fit! Right!?!?! Absolutely! But…be smart about it.

Before you jump right into your strict and rigid “body-sculpting-fat-burning-perfect-human-specimen” routine, remember that you’ve been off the wagon for a couple of weeks…well, if you’re like me that is. The holidays may have put you in a state of relaxation, and you may have been on a very “lenient” diet, so to say. The last thing you want to do is shock your body into a heavy workout routine without securing your foundation. So what’s the best way to do build that foundation? How about a couple of full body workouts?

Season your body and your muscles into the new year with 2-3 full body workouts before jumping right back into your split program. Its a great way to wake those muscles up and get them ready for the long road ahead. Use open kinetic chain exercises to get the muscles communicating amongst eachother readily, and don’t lift to heavy. Start off at 80-90% of your usual work load. This method is far better than risking a body to sore to perform the next day’s workout, or worse yet, pulling a muscle. And don’t forget to stretch, stretch, and stretch again!

Please share your thoughts on this blog, and add any tips you feel are helpful in getting the gears moving for 2010!
