On the scary list:

Butterfinger (mini): 100 calories, 4g fat, 10g sugar

Reeses (mini): 80 calories, 4.5g fat, 7g sugar

Mini packs of Skittles contain 15g sugar

Some better options:

Three Musketeers (mini): 60 calories, 2g fat, 10g sugar

Kit Kat (mini): 73 calories, 3.5g fat, 6.5g sugar

Some Random Favourites

3 Hershey’s Kisses: 67 calories, 4g fat

1 Original Tootsie roll : 26 calories, 0.5g fat

10 Starburst Fruit Chews: 204 calories,4g fat

Caramels (4 pieces): 160 calories, 4.5g fat,16 g sugars

Some Tips to Help Curb those Cravings…

If you are handing out candy this Halloween and find yourself eating half the stash, unable to resist… a great tip is to buy a chocolate/candy brand that isnt your favourite to give to trick or treaters – you’ll be less likely to go overboard!

Make sure you are eating enough during the day! If you prepare a delicious meal which is both satisfying and nutritious, chances are you won’t binge eat your entire home or office candy supply!

Try to buy your Halloween candy as close to Halloween as you can to avoid temptation before the night comes!

Whether you are keeping watch of what your own children are bringing home after trick-or-treating, or you find yourself reaching into the candy bowl a little too often, remember – it’s not necessarily about completely cutting off those delicious little treats, but always keep in mind what is going into the body and then enjoy in moderation! Try going for an extra run, a longer workout at the gym, or whatever gets your heartrate up to work off any over-indulgences.

Fat loss – the most common fitness goal amongst everyday people. You can’t blame them when you look at the food sources that are available to us, but that’s another blog post. One common misconception is this: sit-ups will trim your gut, and lunges will cure your saddle bags. You’ve heard it before. Maybe you’ve even thought that at one point. Fact of the matter is that no matter how many sit-ups you do, you’re never gonna have washboard abs until you melt the layer of fat on your mid section. Ladies, your glutes are never gonna be nice and tight until you hop on that stair master and burn the bags away. Strength training merely gives your muscles underneath some shape and firmness, but unless you’re running a calorie deficit, that shape will never show. You have to burn it away, bottom line. So what’s the best way to burn?

The best way to burn is different for everybody. Maybe your knees hurt when you run, so you can only use elipticals, bicycles, or swimming pools. Maybe your butt gets to sore when you sit on the bike for long periods of time. Maybe you feel like a hampster on the weel when you’re on the eliptical staring out the window at the people in the streets. Whatever your preference is, follow it. You’ll be more motivated to stick to it, and consistency is the key. It really doesn’t matter what the heck you do, just make sure you’re running a calorie deficit, or you’ll just be spinning your tires out.

One good way to do this is to do your cardio right when you start your day, before you eat anything. You’ll be relying on your supply of energy consumed the night before, a lot of which will be stored as fat already if you didn’t burn it away the night before (like if you went to bed shortly after eating for example). Another way to ensure rapid fat loss is to plan your meals wisely and ensure you’re consuming a well balanced diet high in protein, moderate in carbohydrates, and minimal fats. Please feel free to share your methods of fat loss, and ask your personal trainer for more training methods and nutritional methods.

Gyms today are well equiped with machines, dumbells, medicine balls, stability balls, elastic cords, balance boards, and more. But with so many options, how do you decide on what equipment to use in your program? What works best? Choosing equipment for physical conditioning depends on your goals, experience, and limitations.

First, define your goals. Do you want a more muscular and defined physique? Do you want strength? Power? Speed? Balance? When you have clarity of your ultimate goal, you can then design the appropriate training method and the choice of equipment is evident.

For example, if you are a dancer and want to improve your functional strength, machines are a poor choice. They do not allow your body to learn how to coordinate certain movments, leaving the stabilizer muscles unstimulated, and thus limiting your potential to develop the balance and functional strength need for dancing, or any sport for that matter.

That being said, machines still do have a place. If you are new to resistance training, or in a rehabilitation program, machines are very useful to get accustomed to and build strength in basic movements. You can safely use a much heavier load with machines without the fear of losing control making them a preferred choice when training alone without a spotter.

The ideal strength training program will incorporate a variety of equipment. Consider your goals, be it function or aesthetics, and any limitations, such as injuries and safety issues. Using a personal trainer will introduce you to unique and effective methods that are to difficult to perform when you are on your own. Challenge yourself to try something new. You will see faster results and have more fun with your workouts!

Being clear about your desired outcome is always the first step with any success we seek. You have to know where you’re going in order to get there. Having a well defined fitness goal gives us motivation. Any fitness plan is useless if we lack the drive to follow through.

Goals should be evaluated and modified regularly (at least every 3 months) to track your progress and fine tune your fitness routine. Fitness assessments can be used to clearly identify your points of progression, points of regression, or areas you may have plateaued in. From there you can decide what areas of your program need to be modified, and what goals need to be reassessed.

Write your goals down, keep them as specific as possible, and state them in the positive. Instead of “get stronger” or “lose weight”, set an actual measurable amount for your strength training and work towards it, or say “be lean and healthy”.

Whatever your fitness level and the stage of your training, envisioning your outcome is critical to staying motivated. Take some time to design measurable goals and review them at least every 3 months after each fitness assessment. Commit your goal to paper in positive terms, and place them somewhere that you will be reminded every day.

Chat with your Personal Trainer to schedule a fitness assessment and take action today!

For the rest of us, we have to find an external source of motivation that drives us to achieve our goals and push ourselves to the limits. The majority of people start exercises because they feel the need to loose body fat or gain muscle. These are excellent motivational goals but after a few weeks to a few months most people will start to loose there initial surge of motivation. Once this happens you have to find a new source that will keep you going on a long term basis. Here are a few examples of new motivational sources:

- Make small monthly goals which are reasonably obtained within the given time span. Whether it is increasing your leg press by 30 pounds or loosing 2% body fat it has to be something measurable.
- Start a new sport based activity like running a 10k or joining a basketball team. Sports provide ongoing motivation to improve and be your best. These also help create the habit of exercising into your routine which makes going to the gym easier.
- Starting to exercise with a personal trainer or a friend gives you someone to be responsible to show up too. This will eliminate the last minute excuses of being tired or lazy and staying on the couch instead of making it into the gym.

Try one or more of these out and you will see the results you are looking for. Don’t let yourself settle into the same old routine, get bored or give up. Always be open to new fitness modalities, train hard and your body will thank you for it.
