This lecture will discuss the topic of hypertrophy, and the common misunderstanding that high rep endurance training has no place in such a program. Hypertrophy is the process of building lean muscle mass. Research has shown that high intensity, low rep training, is the surefire way to packing on muscle. However, endurance training also has its place in a body builder’s regimine. High rep training can be an extremely useful training technique, and can be incorporated into any mass building program to blast through plateaus and keep you on a steady path to gaining lean, mean, muscle.

Do you ever sit down and eat an entire bag of chips, bucket of popcorn or a whole pizza? When you think of these actions, they are ridiculous, yet they are a common place in today’s society. There are reasons why we all do this and here are a few studies that back up these unnecessary acts of gluttony.

The Stale Popcorn Study – A group of movie goers where given free buckets of stale popcorn and asked to return the uneaten portion at the end of the movie. One group was given large buckets and another was extra large buckets. You can probably guess what the results were: the group with the extra large buckets ate 53% more popcorn then the other group! According to the author Dr. Wansink “Most people eat mindlessly, based on the size of the container and other cues-not the taste of the popcorn or how hungry or full they are.”Most people eat mindlessly, based on the size of the container and other cues-not the taste of the popcorn or how hungry or full they are.”

The More Hassle It Is to Eat, the Less We Eat – This study took place in an office where the candy bowl was put at either 6 feet or directly in front of the seating area. The group of people with the bowl 6 feet away ate twice as much of the group that had the bowl in front of them. The author attributed the results to the fact that people had more time to think before getting more candy.

So what do these two studies mean? Think about what you are eating and why you are doing it. Eating just because you have it in front of you will lead to an increase in calorie consumption and prevent you from achieving your weight loss goals.

It’s a variation of lunge and squat presses. The great thing about these simple exercises is that they work your shoulders, triceps, abs and quads and hamstrings. Do 3 sets of 10 reps of each of these exercises and you are going to get a pretty damn good pump!

Everybody has muscles groups that are weaker and some that are stronger. These muscles develop based on the way you move inside and outside the gym. Over time these imbalances will put strain on the joints and surrounding muscle tissues leading to injury. There are usually simple modifications that can be made to alleviate these issues.
One of the most common imbalance that I encounter in both active and inactive populations is over activation of the trapezius muscle. This muscle group is involved in scapular elevations and retraction. The trapezius (trap) is commonly overdeveloped in active populations due to the aesthetic value of the muscles and improper form that allows for heavier lifts.
Consequence of imbalance: Weak midback muscles can lead to shoulder/upper spinal injuries. The tight muscles put pressures on the joints in an improper way leading to assorted joint pain/mobility issues over time. When the trap is chronically tight and the romboids are underdeveloped it can leads to a change in the scapular angle which changes the function of the surrounding joints.
Rehab: Returning these muscle groups to balance is fairly straight forward but difficult to put into practice. Most importantly the traps must be relaxed during exercise to allow the contraction of the mid-back muscles. This is extremely difficult for people who have to break patterns that have been ingrained for many years. Seated rows, rear flies and mid-back shrugs are great ways to start returning the balance.

So you have started working out, eating better and yet you are still not losing weight. This happens because your not making the right/enough changes to you lifestyle. Here are few pointers that will set you on the road to weight loss.

I know this one seems obvious but burn more calories. Maybe your workouts aren’t intense enough or perhaps they aren’t frequent as they should be. You should be exercising at least 3 times a week at an intensity that will get you sweating. This is a common problem among beginners and long time exercisers who just don’t like working hard.

Nutrition is usually the biggest problem for most exercisers. You should be eating 5+ times a day to optimize your metabolic rate. The more often you eat (without increasing calories) the more weight you will lose. Another good tip is to eat more fruits and vegies while decreasing simple carbohydrates(sugar).

The two above points are by far the most important but you should also try to sleep 7-8 hours a night, drink 2-3 litres of water a day and avoid excess alcohol. Follow these points and you will the lose weight and get the body you have always wanted.

Again the key focus in this video is to keep your elbow stationary and close to your head during the entire movement.
