After almost a 2 week hiatus from being sick I have returned. That sounds like it should be followed by some serious gusto but my energy level is caput. First day back with the Jaaguste machine and things were not so swift. He threw in some new curve balls today. I don’t know if it was his recent trip to Vegas or something he dreamed up but there was some highlights and lowlights to today’s workout. Highlights first loved the new one legged dumbbell curl then extend move. You stand on one leg then do a curl then press the dumbbells to the sky. It has two nice pumps to the arm and shoulder muscles and feels really nice when you complete this one works. Lowlight was some massive dip machine move weird and odd move that almost put me on my ass wrapped in a metal bar. Let’s just say it’s probably not the exercise but me that is the problem but my awkward size and limited abilities paired with foreign movement usual end up in ass over teakettle moves. I must say it was a challenge to make it in but I’m glad it rocked me out of my sick funk and I’m invigorated. See you next week muscle man!!

Is splenda dangerous? – Your Vancouver Personal Trainer Nutritionist tip of the week. A new study recently published in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health has the chairman of Citizens for health in the U.S. up in arms over a recent study and the FDA’s failure to revoke its approval of the artificial sweetener sucralose, marketed under the name “Splenda”.

Splenda’s slogan is “Splenda tastes like sugar, because it’s made from sugar”. The company faced scrutiny for this slogan, as the product is actually mainly chemically derived. Sucralose is a high-potency sweetener, combined with maltodextrin and glucose (that’s the sugar part) as fillers to make Splenda. Splenda is approved for use in Canada and the U.S. and was originally thought to have no real side effects in the body, as the majority of it is not metabolized or absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. This is the premise of most sweeteners.

Well, if you’re taking Splenda to lose weight, this most recent evidence suggests it may be working against you. Secondly, good gut bacteria (microflora) carry out a number of important roles, including fighting off bad bacteria and producing vitamins, and maintaining normal immune system function. A reduction in these helpful microbes may have an affect on medical conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, cardiovascular disease, obesity and cancer.

Spices and Metabolism – Your Vancouver Personal Trainer Nutritionist tip of the week – Have you heard that eating spicy foods can help you burn fat? Although the extent to which spices can actually help you burn off a meal is unclear, studies show that adding certain spices to food (or eating more naturally spicy foods, such as peppers) can help you lose weight.

How does it work? Eating spicy foods may actually help you lose weight in a couple of ways:

1) Increasing thermogenesis (heat production) in the body, which uses up Calories;
2) Increasing satiety, or making you feel fuller, sooner; and most directly
3) Increasing fat oxidation (fat burning).

They also add tons of flavour without adding extra Calories from things like sauces, which may contribute to a lower energy intake at the end of the day.

Some examples of such function ingredients are: capsaicin (hot peppers), black pepper, mixed spices, green tea, and black tea. Black pepper, in addition to being used as a seasoning and stimulating metabolism, may also help increase absorption of some nutrients.

So load up that spice rack and get cooking! Just be sure to watch out for spicy ethnic dishes that are heavy on fat (such as oil or cream), that will negate the benefit of the spices.

Kalev Fitness Training Vancouver DJ Jesse James – Blog entry of the week. Getting up early and working out is both foreign and intensely unexciting to me. But I must admit it is growing on me a little. This Friday I aimed to get to the gym 30 minutes early and really warm up before my work out. Ambitious yes and it turned out to be very rewarding. When Mr Jaaguste (you may not know this but his last name is even harder to say then his first) showed up with his words of encouragement I was excited. So we hit it hard first a combination of arms, chest and back in a cycle for several reps more then I could pump out the previous week. The warm up was really helping me push out several more push-up on the bench then I had ever imaged I could do. Some more reps with weights in front of the mirror and some side hold that’s really worked my abs. And as usual to finish off the work out a unique exercise on the ball that is not only emasculating but difficult. It involves getting the ball tightly up under your torso then crunching with full arms out down then pulling the body straight up and squeezing the back muscles. After the classic 5 more from Kalev I was toast and felt a horrible goodness all over my body.

But salt is a lot more than the flavour that makes your popcorn so delicious. Salt is literally almost everywhere and can have more of an impact on how you look and feel than you may realize.

Salt is an essential mineral that works in the body to regulate water content and blood volume. It is added to foods for flavour, and acts as a preservative. Salt is available in three main forms: unrefined (sea salt), refined (table salt), and iodized salt.

(Just so we’re on the same page, for simplification I generally refer to the stuff on the table as “salt” and the stuff in processed foods as “sodium”.)

The average North American gets around 3500-6000mg per day. The recommended amount of sodium is less than 2300mg (1 teaspoon) per day! But considering that sodium is in most foods in the grocery store, not to mention the massive amounts in restaurant food, this number is near impossible to achieve with Western eating habits.

When you’re young, you can probably get away with the massive amounts of salt that are in most foods without having to think twice about it. But as you get older, salt can turn into a sneaky culprit leading to high blood pressure, increased risk for cardiovascular disease and kidney problems. Not to mention, a high salt intake has been linked to certain types of cancer and bone loss. Needless to say, it’s better to get used to a low-salt lifestyle sooner rather than later.

A lot of my clients ask me if salty foods will make them fat. Calories come from carbohydrates, protein, fat and alcohol. Salt is Calorie free, so a food that is higher in sodium won’t make you gain any more weight than a low-sodium food, per se. The catch is that many high sodium foods are also high in sugar and/or fat, which very well could result in more of you to love, especially if you indulge in those foods often.

If you follow a healthy diet that happens to be high in sodium, any weight gain (or lack of weight loss) is likely due to water retention. High sodium foods will cause you to carry around a bit more water, leaving you with that feeling that is often described simply as “puffy”. No one wants to be puffy, but at least it’s temporary and easily reversible by drinking a lot of water, limiting salt, and good old exercise.

Due to the overabundance of sodium in the diet, sodium deficiency (“hyponatremia”) is very rare. Hyponatremia can occur with endurance athletes (such as marathoners) or bodybuilders, with consumption of large amounts of water without electrolytes, and excessive sweat losses.

Don’t know what to look for or can’t stomach the thought of bland food? Here are some tips for lowering sodium and keeping the flavour in your food:

Avoid processed or packaged foods, unless they are labeled “low sodium,” and read the nutrition facts panel to find out the exact amount of sodium they contain.

Generally, a food is considered “low sodium” if it has less than 140 mg of sodium per serving.

Ask for your meals to be prepared without salt when you eat out.

Use sodium-free spices and herbs instead of salt such as Mrs. Dash, garlic, pepper and basil.

Take the salt shaker off the tableWatch out for notoriously high sodium foods such as: cheese, pretzels, nuts, canned meats/fish, deli food, sauces and soups.

You can imagine the joy I felt pulling my sorry ass out of bed to go join Mr Muscles Kalev for an exciting round of physical fitness. But I did make it and that is more then I can say for myself in previous years. I’m glad that I have this forum to help people out in their own workouts and educate you how Kalev personal training has help me get back into shape. So I would like to take this time to warn you all DO NOT TELL KALEV YOU WENT DRINKING…. He does not care and will work you out harder…… I have been doing a mixture of Kalev training and a DVD program called p90x. To date I have puked zero times at p90x , and today I have puked once at Kalev training. It wasn’t even something hard he pushed me to do it was simple chest pull ups but the mixture of the night before and using the correct posture to complete the exercise was a perfect storm. Enough about my weakness and a little about what I have learned lately from Kalev. First off I am finally starting to really feel the workout and beginning to push ever pull and push and it feels rewarding. My back has shown the most development to date it’s a huge thing for me. I get less back pain at work and I feel myself standing up a lot straighter. So hold that form and feel the burn it’s a great feeling. Secondly vary your workout and ask to do different things Kalev has tons of different ideas and is eager to throw something new at you pick a part you want to work on and ask. I have been doing wrist workouts to help with my hands and wrists and his simple technique has helped dramatically. Third try not to drink the night before it is not rewarding.
