Rian

PERSONAL TRAINER / SPORTS PSYC.

Rian’s friendly, engaging personality, combined with a charming Irish brogue, will keep you motivated to succeed! He pushes you to reach your fitness goals and then ultimately break through what you thought were your limits. His exceptional training style showcases an expertise in Strength Training, Flexibility & Mobility.

Born and raised in Ireland, Rian comes from a sporting background, including football, Gaelic football (a distinctly Irish game somewhat similar to soccer), and swimming. His early years in the fitness industry focused on adolescent fitness, specialising in professional swim coaching and professional underage football (soccer) coaching. Working as both a manager and a trainer honed his skills in detailed planning as well as First Aid and Emergency protocols. Rian has been working in the Fitness Training industry since 2017.

Rian’s personal story highlights his passion for developing the “mindset for success”. In Rian’s words:

Hi👋 I’m Rian! Like many a college student, I worked a regular 90-hour week and enjoyed all those “21 year old” side activities. Then the blow fell: I was diagnosed with a form of blood cancer. All my goals, values, and perspectives were thrown into chaos. What saved me was my prior education in training: to achieve a goal, you need a positive attitude, expanding physical targets, and most of all, persistence. I broke my goals down into what I COULD DO every day to progress AND I never gave up! Now I am a qualified Fitness Trainer, and loving it! My own story exemplifies why, to me, a positive mindset is the defining factor for every single person’s success.

Personal Interests:

Rian keeps himself physically challenged and motivated with Rock climbing, either at The Hive or at the Riley Park boulder. A love for hiking provides that important dose of “nature” and feeds his inner spirit. Meditation is his tool for mindfulness and allows him to be more attentive and compassionate in his training methods.

Rian Farell - Family / Kids Fitness Bio

Hi! My name is Rian, a trainer hailing from the lands of myths and legend, Ireland! I’m excited to be part of the new KFS “Family Fitness” program! I’ve worked with kids of all ages and abilities in numerous situations, and across these roles, I’ve accumulated 8 years of working with Under-16 demographics! As a result, I’m extremely adept with this practice, and will be responsible for writing the new KFS procedural guidelines. My experiences as both a manager and a trainer, has given me expertise with age-specific detailed planning as well as those important considerations of emergency protocols and First-Aid requirements. I spent my early years in the fitness industry working with a range of ages, from 5year olds to adolescents. I managed underage camps for 2 years and also specialised in professional swim coaching. Later on I progressed to professional underage football (soccer) coaching and worked as both a manager and a trainer. I find working with younger age groups to be extremely rewarding! With the right patience and approach, you get to watch these young students grow their skills and self-confidence. They are so proud of their achievements, and so am I! Brennan

Get to know Brennan below:

“I struggled with my weight for a long time. I was in reasonable shape while in high school as I attended PE classes but I was no longer physically active after graduating. Shortly after graduating, I took some general education at Vancouver Island University.  Eventually, I shifted my focus toward computer science. While studying, I never worked out and had a very bad eating habit.  I carried on a sedentary lifestyle for many years while attending university, gradually getting heavier and heavier.  I didn’t like my self-image & I didn’t feel good about myself.  Eventually, I decided to try out CrossFit.  When I first started, I walked in as a fat guy weighing 220 lbs who could barely complete one pull-up. I struggled to push up and could not lunge without crazy pain in my legs.  Slowly but surely, I kept attending CrossFit classes, doing what I could and working on my mobility.

I struggled to run as I would usually get cramps and shin splints within the first few minutes of a trail run. So I started booking physiotherapy appointments, trying to resolve the issue so I could begin to start running again.  After about a year of CrossFit training, I developed plenty of functional strength & managed to reach 190 lbs, but I still continued to eat fast food regularly as I was still pretty addicted to it. In 2017, I decided I would take a little bit of time off CrossFit. A couple of weeks later I stood on the scale once again and was shocked to find out that I ballooned up to 235 lbs. I felt frustrated from gaining all the weight back and then some.

In early 2018, I decided that I was no longer going to be overweight, that I was radically going to transform myself and my body no matter how hard or painful it was. I started a Keto diet and started to lose weight again. While I was on my weight loss journey, I decided then that I was going to dedicate the rest of my life to pushing through discomfort.   I decided that I was going to start training in martial arts & learn how to fight. I started training at Cascadia martial arts which was a local cardio kickboxing gym not too far from where I lived.

After a couple of months of kickboxing training and a better understanding of nutrition, I lost about 80 lbs and felt like a completely new person.  I ended up later moving to Vancouver in April of 2019 to study at BCIT. While attending tech school, I began training religiously in Muay Thai & Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. After School was finished, I landed a job at Industrial Light & Magic and began to double down on my martial arts training as well as earning a Personal Training certification from CanfitPro. Over the last few months, I started attending a wrestling club as well, not too far from my home, and I found it to be much more physically and mentally demanding than Muay Thai sparring or Jiu Jitsu.  To this day I am still in love with martial arts and will continue to train throughout my life.

My goal is to become a professional fighter and have at least one professional MMA fight in my life so that I can reflect on where I started and how far I have come.  I want to continue training and ultimately find out who I really am on the inside and I would like to share my love and passion for martial arts & fitness with others so I can help transform their lives as well.”

Hi! My name is Brennan, a trainer and kickboxing instructor from Vancouver Island. I’m very excited to be part of the KFS “Family Fitness” program! I’ve trained kids of all ages from 6 to 14 in boxing & kickboxing and I am very confident in my abilities as a result. I am patient and very adaptable, as I have trained different kids of all types. I spent many years training in the boxing and Muay Thai kickboxing world and have trained with people of all ages and demographics. I have always found that helping kids build skills, fitness and confidence to be extremely rewarding. You will be able to enjoy watching your kids develop their skills, confidence & discipline while also having fun. My goal is to ultimately help kids discover their own path in any sport or activity-related endeavour.

He briefly trained with the Philippine Badminton Team and embraced various sports, always seeking a competitive edge. Even in his late 30s, Rhaul remains actively involved in competitive sports. Recently, he proudly represented the Philippine Mixed Masters Team at the World Beach Ultimate Championship in California from November 1st to 5th. Additionally, Rhaul regularly participates in ultimate frisbee club tournaments and badminton competitions.

Notably, Rhaul brings over a decade of experience as a successful realtor in the Philippines. His fervor for fitness is evident through his commitment to maintaining a fit and healthy lifestyle. In 2019, Rhaul ventured into providing personal training services and assumed management responsibilities, instructing at a fitness kickboxing studio in Vancouver for over two years.

He finds joy in biking and hiking activities, especially during the summer months. Rhaul lives in Vancouver with his wife and cat.
